It should surely be a truth universally acknowledged that on hot, windy days there is not the usual heap of washing that would benefit from drying out on the line!!
It's HOT here.
It's been an odd day today made odder by one of those weird moments when Mother says something that totally disarms me. She has read someone's experiences of Endometriosis and realised how horrible it can be. She understands at last. That made me really sad and happy all at once.
BTW for future reference, Endometriosis is really horrible. You don't catch it, you don't inherit it, you just have it. Doctors are pretty ignorant of it and mostly don't care (in my experience). Just saying.
Yesterday I saw the Avengers film!!! I actually saw it this time - but not in 3D which was the screen that malfunctioned last week. It's a great film but I don't think I'd like to see it in 3D, that might just have been a bit terrifying.
I also had a weird dream last night. I don't often remember dreams, just snatches of them. For some reason I was in a competition for the cleanest car which was being held in a university carpark. Don't know why, this is just what I remember! It wasn't my car either, we all had the same sort of saloon car in white. I was doing some last-minute cleaning bits and accidentally (from nowhere apparently) flicked a slug onto the car next to mine. had to carefully prise it off the other car.
Weird.
I went to the cinema last night with johnrw. We left home at 5pm and got back around 10pm. Most of the evening was spent in the cinema, some of the time was spent in Pizza Hut. The weird thing is that we didn't actually watch a film!!
( so how did that happen, do you just like hanging around in cinema foyers? )
( and then there was the cinema part.... )
Neighbour who is (I learned recently) 8 years old often stops for a chat while I'm getting out of my car home from work. We had this conversation Monday:
Him: What's that? *points to box on passenger seat* Me: It's my new boots *opens box* Him: What do you need them for Me: Boots. For my feet. Him: Why do you need boots? Me: My old boots have a hole in them Him: How did you get a hole in them? Me: I've worn them too much so they've got a hole underneath them Him: Well you shouldn't do that then Me: *pausing to think* I shouldn't, should I Him: No, you need to look after them then you won't have to buy new boots Me: I will look after them. Him: *points into car* What's that? Me: That's my large, plastic insect
I was in two minds about it but then I couldn't resist just seeing what it was like and then I joined POTTERMORE!
It's slow on my machine - I use a netbook so have a very small screen which I need to scroll up and down a lot. It's also a bit frustrating but I'm gradually finding how it works. I have a fabulous dragon heart wand and I was sorted into ....
( hahahaha )
and if anyone wants to know my Pottermore name - which the site gives you - I can only remember the first bit which is riverheart then something like 2496? See, I'm really not good at working out new sites and passcodes etc.
It's Sunday. I have a bad head. All is normal :(
Eventually, I'll get round to replying to messages, birthday wishes and telling the wonderful things that happened over Easter.
Meanwhile, things you need to make way for in your diaries - Eastercon 2013 (in Bradford) and Eastercon 2014 in Glasgow - hooray!!!! Then London in 2014 for Worldcon. So much to start saving up pennies for.
Red wine is a natural form of pain relief.
Or else it just gives you such a bad headache you don't notice the other pains.
Just for my info really, don't know why.
I hurt. All over. I can't believe I'm so horribly unfit that I can't do normal household things without breaking myself the next day but maybe I am. If I wasn't so tired I'd try some sort of keep fit but I think that might just kill me.
Sitting down for lunch was a disaster, I might not be able to move from the desk. Even my jaw is stiff - and no, haven't been talking that much (have I?).
I started to clean the kitchen. What am I doing here? Bad internet.
I have been to the Edge and back!! Alderley Edge to be specific. It was an adventure that nearly didn't happen when I woke up with bad pain in my head BUT the fabulous frostfox turned up at the door and I couldn't resist the urge to pilgrim to Alderley Edge.
If you've never read any of Alan Garner's works then GO NOW and do so immediately. Try The Weird Stone of Brisingamen for starters and then you'll know why Alderley Edge is somewhere I've had pictures in my head of for many years. It's a lot more wet and damp and dank than I had imagined in my own head but it's this dampness that makes it so much more magical because given where it is and the way the land lies, it shouldn't be wet and there certainly shouldn't be wells and a reservoir so high up on a rocky outcrop. Weird but wonderful.
( Some photos )
I seriously think the internet is conspiring against me. At work our internet connection has gone from being not good to almost non-existent and at home I've not had much luck with websites either. It must be me. Mum and wrist watches don't go well together so maybe me and computers are a bad match. I also seem to kill them. I'm on my second at work in five years and due a new one very soon because despite repairs my current box is a bit sick. I keep it clean, I keep its air vents clear and I talk nicely (usually) to it, it should be a really happy computer box.
Anyway, that's my excuse for limited computer presence. I have very little patience so small setbacks in computing make me give up VERY quickly. I need to be more patient!
I've got man-flu. I feel sorry for myself. It helps when I'm doing something to take my mind of it but this weekend I've ironed lots of things, washed lots of things, poked about in the garden and pruned stuff and cleaned the oven. Now I'm too tired to do more things. I hate having an active mind and a reluctant body :(
I had a number of ideas over the weekend for interesting LJ posts, thought-provoking and intelligent. However, as so often happens, I am now home again and time and brain speed is limited so in order to catch up I shall resort to listing:
I WENT TO GLASGOW!!!! I'd forgotten how much I LOVE Glasgow I was at a Convention - Satellite3 and really, really enjoyed it Met old friends and old colleagues and saw old, familiar streets Made pilgrimage to place of ancient work now tragically the site of a restaurant Stood outside a Tardis Saw hundreds of old sewing machines in a shop window Almost saw a riot Found a window full of dust-scratched penises Had afternoon drinks with lalajia who I haven't seen in YEARS and that is too long. Met child-of- lalajia and didn't break her while Mum went upstairs in LUSH LUSH!!!! Great pilgrimage. Had afternoon tea in Grand Central Hotel with parents Met up with lovely convention folks who are official family now Talked Listened to people Listened to squeaky-braked buses and taxis all night Did a lot of squeeeeeing
Back at work. Crap :(

Last week was pretty horrible all round but it ended with a lovely weekend. We had a visit from alex_holden who is very talented in the making of Tablet (I'm trying hard not to eat it all at once, honest!) and showed us some beautiful carved things of his.
Best of all, with two boys in the house both armed with multiple tool boxes, I am now the happy owner of a new kitchen tap!!!! You have to understand, things such as taps are important and glorious in my world and this one is neat and white and has taps that turn easily and don't squeak!
Happy :)
I was thinking today while shovelling through the usual pile of mess how much I appreciate the friends we have amassed.
We are hoping to welcome alex_holden to our spare bedroom very soon and it occurred to me that he might understand our home and its weird ways. I think he understands that random pliers, chisels or bits of wood lying around the sitting room are not unusual (for us!). I'm hoping he will not mind that the odd shiny bit on the carpet is stray solder and the upside-down teradactyl (model) in the kitchen is perfectly sane.
Other friends, such as lucas_t_bear are in agreement that a model Tardis is quite acceptable on the mantelpiece and a jar of Flu Powder at the ready is not unusual.
Thank goodness for real friends. Last night the starship Enterprise had a scary flight from the top of the wardrobe that lives in the sitting room to the floor followed by a guilty feline. It isn't everyone who can say that!
While some have had snow, we have had ice! Ice has been falling from the sky, quite literally and ice formed under our feet and it's been cold and foggy and frankly snow would have looked nicer!
Headache thing had a down-turn this weekend and still feeling odd. Not actually sure if what is wrong now is head pain related so this may not be a good test of the extra salt thing. Boss MADE me make a GP appointment so I've done it and will see him soon. I have to be half dead before going to the doctor - I HATE going to the doctor - but I feel so wrung out it's time to be brave.
If he tells me to get some exercise again (yes, that was last year's answer to all my ills. Didn't work) I shall just hide in a dark corner for a few months, see if that works.

So, how's the Sodium anti-headache thing going??
Quite well, thank you.
I've only had one really bad headache day since I posted last about the Sodium experiment - and I will link to some sites I found which mention it but not tonight, too tired, sorry :(
It's too early to take any great conclusions and I am trying at the same time to get back to a sort of diabetic diet. I'm not diabetic but have most of the symptoms. I metabolise food very, very quickly and along with my blood pressure, my sugar levels have an unnerving habit of dropping suddenly. So, I try to eat every three hours but just a little snack - piece of fruit, plain biscuit etc. I'm adding to that a handful of salted peanuts now of course.
It seems to help my headaches which johnrw has suggested sound diabetic in type. I've no idea, I just know they hurt and often become migrainous and then the world around me is my enemy.
So, I'll keep mentioning this experiment but so far, it's been pretty encouraging and quite exciting.
I'm trying a new anti-migraine idea by keeping my Sodium levels up. It won't work for everyone of course but some studies have shown that migraine may be linked to low Sodium levels.
It makes sense to me because I deliberately limit my salt intake to the point of taking no extra salt except for some when cooking vegetables. Even the butter we use is salt free. I also have low blood pressure - it's always been that way - so by upping my salt, I'm not hugely risking anything. Actually, a bit more blood pressure would probably be beneficial.
The idea is that when a headache looms (as I call it) you take on salt. I can eat salted peanuts now without feeling guilty!!
As with so many other anti-migraine things, I suspect I shall be sorely disappointed before long but it's worth a try. Three days with none or almost no head pain is certainly worth it so far.

Well, the weather's gone all seasonal on us at last. Seasonal is good, it feels right, but I'd forgotten how cold seasonal is!
Also seasonal is the lack of anything watchable on TV.
It's good to feel we're on track with the calendar again!
